Wall Street futures are declining as concerns over weakness in U.S. regional banks combine with ongoing fears of trade tensions between the U.S. and China. Oracle reports strong long-term forecasts supported by a surge in AI-driven demand, while railroad operator CSX posts a decline in profit but still beats expectations. Meanwhile, Micron will halt server chip shipments to China, and gold continues its record rally.
1. Futures drop
U.S. stock futures are moving lower on Friday, and losses are expected to continue, as investors worry about the stability of regional banks.
As of 03:46 ET (07:46 GMT), Dow futures were down 1.2%, S&P 500 futures down 1.5%, and Nasdaq 100 futures down 1.5%.
Major Wall Street indices closed lower yesterday, after Zions Bancorporation issued a negative credit update, intensifying concerns following the September failures of First Brands and TriColor.
Shares of Zions fell 13%, while Western Alliance lost over 10% after announcing that it had filed a fraud lawsuit against a borrower. This pushed U.S. Treasury yields higher, putting additional pressure on stocks.
Analysts at Vital Knowledge noted that investors “are growing increasingly concerned about potential systemic risk,” but added that “overall credit quality remains healthy, and the issues appear isolated.”
2. Oracle guidance
Oracle provides optimistic long-term guidance, fueled by strong AI-driven demand.
At a meeting with analysts on Thursday, the company’s CFO stated that by fiscal 2030, Oracle expects revenue of $225 billion and earnings of $21 per share, exceeding Wall Street estimates.
About two-thirds of sales are projected to come from Oracle’s AI-enhanced cloud services. CEO Clay Magouyrk added that new bookings are coming from a wide range of clients, not just OpenAI.
Analysts, however, noted that such bullish guidance is largely priced in due to widespread AI enthusiasm. According to LSEG estimates, gross margins are expected to decline slightly by 2027 due to higher investments in infrastructure and AI.
Oracle shares are lower in after-hours trading, though investors expect the company to maintain long-term growth.
3. CSX: profit falls but results beat estimates
CSX shares rise in after-hours trading after the company reports quarterly results that exceed expectations, despite a drop in profit.
The railroad operator posted $694 million in earnings, or $0.37 per share. Adjusting for one-time charges, earnings would have been $0.44 per share, slightly above analyst forecasts.
New CEO Steve Angel hints that the company will consider potential strategic mergers, fueling speculation about a future tie-up with BNSF (owned by Berkshire Hathaway).
However, the CSX-BNSF partnership announced in August reduces the likelihood of a full merger, as the companies are already integrating routes between the East and West Coasts.
Investors will closely watch whether CSX takes bolder action under pressure from activist investor Ancora Holdings, which advocates for more aggressive consolidation in the sector.
4. Micron to halt server chip shipments to China
Micron Technology plans to stop supplying server chips to Chinese data centers after China banned its products in “critical infrastructure” in 2023 — a move seen as retaliation for U.S. restrictions on chip and AI technology exports.
The company will continue supplying Lenovo and another major Chinese client with operations outside China, and will maintain sales to China’s automotive and mobile sectors.
China still accounts for roughly 12% of Micron’s revenue, so the impact will be limited but noticeable.
Server chips remain a critical component for AI development, as they power the data centers running advanced AI models.
5. Gold continues record rally
Gold prices are rising to new record highs, approaching $4,400 per ounce, supported by expectations of a Fed rate cut and rising U.S.-China trade tensions, which push investors toward safe-haven assets.
Spot gold trades around $4,339 per ounce, after briefly reaching $4,379 — a new record. December gold futures also gain 1% to $4,348.86.
Gold is on track for its ninth consecutive weekly gain and fifth straight record session, as central banks continue to increase purchases, ETFs see fresh inflows, and demand in Asia remains robust.
