Will the Dollar-Yen Break 160 — and What Comes Next?

(Bloomberg Intelligence) — Dollar-Yen bulls are back in control, with a convincing bearish case for the yen driven by cyclical, structural, and geopolitical factors. A broad dollar rebound strengthens the case for further gains, making the 160 level more likely than 150, while Euro-Yen could push toward 185, and the Swiss franc benefits from defensive FX flows. However, a potential intervention in the near term could curb yen bears.

1. Level 160 More Likely Than 150; Euro-Yen Breaks Above 180

Japan’s economic and fiscal-monetary policies under new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, rising tensions between China and Japan, and a strengthening U.S. dollar have shifted the bearish argument for Dollar-Yen from earlier in the year. Japan has confirmed a fiscal package of ¥21.3 trillion, signaling a slower normalization by the BoJ and a preference for fiscal stimulus over tightening. This temporarily favors yen bears.

All indicators suggest that 160 will be reached before 150, and the Euro-Yen rally could extend past 180. However, the Ministry of Finance likely already sees the move as excessive, increasing the risk of FX intervention.

2. FX Intervention Risk Rises After Sharp Yen Weakness

Dollar-Yen has climbed 12% since April, and an additional 7.5% since early October. This has not gone unnoticed by the Ministry of Finance and the BoJ. Authorities remain focused on inflation, and the yen’s weakening adds to the inflationary risk.

If Dollar-Yen continues along its current trajectory, it could reach 166.30 by year-end — almost certainly triggering intervention.

3. Expected Fiscal Path Turns Negative for the Yen

Structural fiscal factors will play an increasingly important role in FX markets in 2026. Markets are reassessing Japan’s medium- and long-term outlook as well as its government debt. This creates a new fiscal risk premium that will weigh on the yen following the announcement of the fiscal package on November 21.

If the BoJ delays or cancels normalization, it will raise inflation expectations and bond yields, further weakening the yen.

4. Yen Bulls Need Proven BoJ Normalization

Yen bulls are relying on a normalizing policy from the BoJ, but expectations have shifted following the election of Takaichi. The BoJ has raised rates by a total of 60 bps since early 2024, yet markets are already pricing in a more hawkish stance, which could imply further hikes in 2026.

The weaker the normalization, the weaker the yen remains.

5. Geopolitics: New Pressure on the Yen

Beyond economic factors, geopolitical tensions between China and Japan over Taiwan are undermining the yen’s safe-haven status. This reverses the expectations from earlier in the year and casts doubt on the view that the yen will attract defensive capital in 2026.
