The tone around consumer, retail, and technology stocks during recent Goldman Sachs thematic conferences has been positive — and hedge funds have responded, writes the bank’s consumer sector specialist in a note.
Capital flows into consumer stocks have been very strong across both the cash and prime brokerage desks of the bank, with last week marking the largest buying spree in the past three years (on a notional basis), according to Scott Feiler.
He notes that the consumer discretionary group was the most heavily sold in Goldman Sachs’ prime portfolio during the first half of the year, but over the past seven weeks, there has been a sharp reversal.
There has been increased buying following the bank’s retail conference two weeks ago, which accelerated last week. According to Feiler, the sector has been bought in seven of the last eight weeks.
