Swiss Franc Rises to Key Levels Amid Weak Dollar

The Swiss franc is emerging as one of the clearest beneficiaries of the recent wave of U.S. dollar weakness, rising to levels that in the past would almost certainly have triggered central bank intervention.

The USD/CHF currency pair is now trading consistently below 0.77 – the strongest levels for the franc since the Swiss National Bank removed the currency cap. The franc is reaching similar peaks against the euro. Geopolitical tensions, renewed trade threats from Washington, and the fact that Switzerland remains outside the scope of tariffs are driving strong demand for the Swiss currency at a time when confidence in the dollar is waning.

Notably, there appears to be a degree of tolerance from the Swiss National Bank toward the movement. The EUR/CHF rate remains around levels that have historically prompted interventions, but the continued decline in sight deposits suggests that the central bank is, for now, refraining from action.

This restraint comes despite open acknowledgments by policymakers of the deflationary effects of a strong franc. Swiss National Bank President Martin Schlegel warns that inflation could again fall below zero this year, while emphasizing that the threshold for returning to negative interest rates, which would weaken the currency, remains very high.

Despite the pronounced appreciation, the franc’s movement aligns more with a long-term trend than with a sudden shock. The trade-weighted Swiss franc has appreciated almost uninterruptedly for nearly eight years, indicating that stability can coexist with gradual and predictable appreciation.

Although Switzerland offers low yields, demand for a safe haven dominates. Even the hypothetical prospect of a return to negative rates is unlikely to deter investors seeking stability, liquidity, and political neutrality amid heightened diversification of reserves.

All of this makes the franc more than just a defensive position. In a world increasingly questioning the dollar’s dominant role, the Swiss franc is beginning to behave as a “hidden” reserve currency – limited in supply, highly trusted, and largely insulated from political and monetary headwinds.
